Day 33 of #LiveWell2017
One of my favorite books is Three Deep Breaths by Thomas Crum of Aikiworks, Inc. In the book, Tom describes the power of using deep breathing to get centered, to discover possibility, and to let go of judgement.
This simple act of taking three deep breaths really does relieve stress and ensure focus on the present, bringing us into a mindful state and allowing us to fully experience what is going on around us at this very minute. When I do this, I feel my blood pressure drop, I feel my racing thoughts slow down, I feel calmer.
Here’s how it works:
- Breath #1: The Centering Breath – Breath in the present moment, with balance and energy
- Breath #2: The Possibility Breath – Breath in the “me I want to be” with power and purpose
- Breath #3: The Discovery Breath – Breath in the mystery, let go of judgment
Whether you are in the middle of an argument, standing in line at the post office, or trying to get to sleep at night, taking three deep breaths will calm your mind and body and allow you to get the most out of this minute.
Try it today. Take three deep breaths. Live the moment. Honor your experience. Let’s make the world a calmer, healthier, happier place.
This is great. Mindful breathing has been one of my main focuses lately, but I never thought of giving each breath a purpose. I really like that idea. It seems like a great way to make your breathing more intentional, thus more grounded.
I agree, Myles. It’s a subtle shift, but a powerful one.
